Here’s Why 12 Players Of PBKS Including Shreyas Iyer Got Penalized By BCCI After Win Over CSK

Victory tasted sweet for Punjab Kings but it came with a costly twist. After securing an impressive five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2026, the team has been hit with heavy fines due to repeated over-rate violations.

Captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined a hefty ₹24 lakh. Along with him, the rest of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, will have to pay either ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever is lower. The reason for this strict action is that this was PBKS’ second over-rate offence of the season.

During the match itself, the penalty had an on-field impact too. Because of the slow over rate, PBKS were forced to bring in an extra fielder inside the 30-yard circle for the final two overs. Despite this disadvantage, they managed to pull off a remarkable chase.

CSK had posted a massive total of 209/5 in their 20 overs, putting PBKS under serious pressure. However, Punjab Kings rose to the challenge and chased down the target with eight balls to spare, making it a memorable win.

But what exactly are these over-rate rules, and why are the penalties so strict?

The IPL follows a Code of Conduct that ensures matches are completed on time. If a bowling team fails to maintain the required minimum over rate, penalties are applied based on how many times the offence has occurred during the season.

For the first offence, the captain is fined ₹12 lakh.

For the second offence, like in the case of PBKS, the captain is fined ₹24 lakh, while other players are fined ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee.

If things get worse, the punishment becomes even more serious. For the third and subsequent offences, the captain faces a ₹30 lakh fine and is also banned from playing the next match. Meanwhile, the rest of the players can be fined up to ₹12 lakh or 50% of their match fee.

These rules apply regardless of whether the designated captain is part of the playing XI or not. If the official captain isn’t playing, the acting captain for that match is held responsible.

So while PBKS continue their winning run in the IPL 2026, they will need to be more careful with their over rates going forward. Another slip-up could not only cost them more money but also result in their captain missing an important game.
