ICC Has Come Up With New Ways To Convince PCB For Accepting Hybrid Model For CT2025

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken an active role in addressing the ongoing venue dispute for the Champions Trophy 2025, attempting to mediate between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The situation has grown increasingly complex, with the BCCI refusing to send the Indian cricket team to Pakistan and advocating for a hybrid model for the tournament.

The BCCI has formally communicated to the ICC that India will not play matches in Pakistan due to political and diplomatic tensions. They are pushing for all Indian matches, including the final, to be held in the UAE. However, the PCB has resisted the hybrid model, maintaining that Pakistan is fully capable of hosting the tournament and it is also arguing that when six other participating nations have no objections to playing in Pakistan, what the problem with India is.

To break the deadlock, the ICC is reportedly offering the PCB additional financial incentives to accept the hybrid model. This includes hosting Indian matches and possibly the final in Dubai (if India qualifies). However, still things may not fall in the right place as the PCB has stated that even if a hybrid model is implemented, the India-Pakistan group-stage match and the final should be held in Lahore. However, the BCCI insists on Dubai for all Indian matches.

The ICC is holding a virtual meeting of its executive board to discuss the issue and explore potential solutions. A decision is expected soon, as preparations for the tournament are already underway.

The PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has not commented publicly on the matter but has reiterated Pakistan’s readiness to host the event as scheduled.

The Champions Trophy is slated to run from February 19 to March 9, 2025, with the following details proposed by the PCB:

Venues: Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi

Preparations: Construction and upgrades at the stadiums are progressing as planned

This is not the first time that the PCB has faced a hybrid hosting model. For the 2023 Asia Cup, matches were divided between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with the final played outside Pakistan. The PCB appears keen to avoid a similar arrangement for the Champions Trophy.

The ICC must balance the BCCI’s concerns with the PCB’s insistence on hosting the event primarily in Pakistan. A decision on the format and venues will need to address the interests of both the boards while keeping the tournament’s schedule intact.

The ICC’s resolution of this dispute will set a big example for the future multi-nation tournaments hosted in politically sensitive regions.
