“If You’re Not In Their Good Books….,” Raveena Tandon Talks About 90s Film Industry Politics

The Bollywood industry has changed dramatically over the years, especially when it comes to how celebrities deal with rumours and media attention. Today, actors can instantly clarify stories through social media but things were very different during the 1990s. Actress Raveena Tandon says stars from that era often had little control over public narratives once sensational headlines appeared in newspapers and tabloids.

Speaking during a recent appearance on a podcast, Raveena reflected on how media culture in the ’90s created immense pressure for actors. According to her, gossip journalism and exaggerated reporting frequently shaped public opinion, while celebrities had very limited opportunities to explain their side of the story.

The actress explained that unlike today’s digital era, there were no platforms like Instagram or X where actors could directly communicate with fans. Because of that, rumours and controversial headlines often spread quickly and stayed in people’s minds for a long time, even if they were inaccurate.

Raveena Tandon also pointed out that media relationships played a major role in the industry during that period. She suggested that celebrities who maintained strong connections with editors and journalists were often treated more positively, while actors who preferred privacy found themselves facing constant speculation and negative coverage.

Raveena Tandon added that by the time clarifications or apologies appeared in the media, the damage had usually already been done. Public perception was shaped by bold headlines and small corrections later made little difference to how people remembered the stories.

This is not the first time Raveena Tandon has spoken about her difficult experiences with the press. In an earlier interview, she revealed that she faced harsh personal criticism, body shaming and false stories during the peak of her career. The actress had even said she wished she could go back and take legal action against those responsible for spreading misleading reports. She also admitted that there was a phase when she felt completely dependent on editors and media narratives. Despite those challenges, Raveena remains one of the most popular Bollywood  actresses from the 1990s era.

On the professional front, she was last seen in Ghudchadi alongside Sanjay Dutt. Raveena Tandon will next appear in Welcome To The Jungle with Akshay Kumar. The film also stars Suniel Shetty, Disha Patani, Jacqueline Fernandez, Arshad Warsi, Jackie Shroff, Paresh Rawal and Lara Dutta. She also has Vishwanath & Sons with Suriya lined up for release.
