Karun Nair’s return to the Indian Test squad was built on a strong domestic cricket season but his performance in the second innings of the Lord’s Test against England turned out to be a major talking point and not for the right reasons. His unexpected dismissal left fans and cricket experts questioning his shot selection and mental clarity in a high-pressure moment.

The 33 years old cricketer was seemingly settling into his innings, having been promoted to the No. 3 slot after Sai Sudharsan was dropped from the second Test. However, his time at the crease was cut short by a surprising and uncharacteristic decision to leave a straight delivery from Brydon Carse. The ball struck him on the pads and with no swing or deviation, it was a straightforward LBW decision in England’s favour. This incident occurred on the third delivery of the 13th over and it changed the tone of India’s innings dramatically.

Dinesh Karthik who was on commentary at the time expressed strong disappointment in Karun Nair’s approach. He described the dismissal as “ordinary” and was baffled by the batter’s decision to leave a delivery that showed no signs of swing. Dinesh Karthik remarked that Karun Nair had looked solid until that point and it was difficult to comprehend what was going through his mind.

Michael Atherton, the former England captain, also weighed in on the moment. He noted that the delivery came from the pavilion end, a side known to assist balls in angling back into right-handers due to the slope at Lord’s. Atherton called it a “very strange leave” and pointed out that Karun Nair, who had taken the blow on the inside of his pad, would probably wake up with a heavy bruise to remind him of the misjudgment.

Anil Kumble, speaking after the day’s play on the official broadcast, did not shy away from criticism either. He termed the dismissal a “brain fade” and said it was a wasted opportunity for Nair, who had done the hard work to return to the squad and get a solid start. Anil Kumble reflected on how the momentum shifted to England following the dismissals of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who played a rash shot, followed by Karun Nair and then Shubman Gill, which handed a slight but vital edge to the hosts.

Despite Washington Sundar’s heroics with the ball, claiming four wickets to restrict England to 192 in their second innings, India’s batting faltered in the chase of 193 on a deteriorating Lord’s pitch. By stumps on Day 4, the Indian team was reeling at 58 for 4, leaving the outcome of the match hanging in the balance.

Karun Nair’s dismissal not only disrupted India’s chase but also reignited concerns about temperament and decision-making in pressure situations, especially from players who are given rare chances to cement their place in the national side.
