India’s struggles in the ongoing five-match T20I series against England continued as they suffered a crushing 125-run defeat in the third match at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, on Tuesday (July 7). The heavy loss gave England a 2-0 lead in the series and handed India an unwanted place in the record books.
Chasing a challenging target of 202 after England posted 201/7, India’s batting line-up collapsed for just 76 runs in 11.4 overs. Jofra Archer starred with three wickets, while Josh Tongue ripped through the visitors’ batting order by claiming four wickets to seal a dominant victory for the hosts.
The defeat marked India’s biggest ever loss in T20I cricket in terms of runs. It was also the first time in the last 20 years that India had lost a T20I match by a margin of more than 100 runs.
India’s previous biggest defeat in the format came on February 6, 2019, when New Zealand beat them by 80 runs in Wellington. Before Tuesday’s defeat, their heaviest T20I loss on the English soil was a 17-run defeat against England in Nottingham on July 10, 2022.
Since lifting their record-extending third ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title in March 2026, India have struggled to maintain their winning form. The team has now lost four of its last five T20I matches and is still searching for its first victory during this difficult run.

England, meanwhile, continued their impressive record in the format. The 125-run victory was their fifth T20I win by a margin of more than 100 runs. Their earlier big victories came against South Africa (146 runs), West Indies (137 runs), Afghanistan (116 runs) and Australia (100 runs).
For India, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was the joint highest scorer with 13 runs off just five balls. Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan also made 13, while Abhishek Sharma and Axar Patel were the only other batters to reach double figures with 10 runs each.
The defeat in Nottingham was also India’s fourth loss under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, adding more pressure on the visitors as they look to keep the series alive.
