The Champions Trophy 2025 will be hosted by Pakistan and though India has agreed to play its matches on neutral ground in the UAE for the upcoming tournament, yet reports suggest a significant exception may occur.
The Indian cricket team’s captain Rohit Sharma is reportedly set to travel to Pakistan to participate in the tournament’s grand opening ceremony. This marks the return of the Champions Trophy after an eight-year hiatus.
Sources have indicated that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) plans to host an elaborate opening ceremony, tentatively scheduled for February 16 or 17. It is customary for all team captains to be present at such events during ICC tournaments. According to reports, the Indian skipper’s attendance is being considered as part of this tradition, signifying a gesture of sportsmanship despite the geopolitical tensions between both the nations.
The Indian team’s last visit to Pakistan dates back to 2008, when they played in the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka. During the same tournament, India faced Pakistan on their home turf in the Super Four stage, a match that ended in an eight-wicket defeat for India. The Champions Trophy 2025 represents a significant milestone for Pakistan, as it will be the first major ICC event hosted there in nearly three decades since the 1996 Cricket World Cup, co-hosted with India and Sri Lanka.
This edition of the Champions Trophy, scheduled to commence on February 19, will adopt a hybrid format. While most matches are slated to take place in Pakistan, India’s fixtures, including any potential knockout games, will be held in the UAE. The opening match will feature Pakistan against New Zealand in Karachi, while the much-anticipated clash between India and Pakistan is scheduled for February 23 at Dubai. India’s campaign will kick off against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium.
As defending champions, Pakistan enters the tournament with high expectations, having triumphed over India in the 2017 final with a commanding 180-run victory. The return of this high-stakes competition to Pakistan after such a long interval adds to the excitement and significance of the event.
