The situation across the border has been deteriorating since the operation, with reports of cross-border shelling in several Indian states and precautionary blackouts in vulnerable areas. These growing threats spilled into the sporting world when a high-profile IPL match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala was interrupted midway due to a floodlight malfunction. While initially dismissed as a technical issue, the match was later abandoned altogether and players as well as officials were escorted out under heightened security. The venue’s proximity to the border, just 60 kilometers away, further raised alarm.

In the days that followed, concerns from foreign players began to surface, with many expressing a desire to leave India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the suspension through a statement to PTI, where a senior official remarked that it would be inappropriate for cricket to continue while the nation faces the possibility of armed conflict.

This isn’t the first time external events have disrupted the smooth flow of the IPL. Since its inception, the league has occasionally been disrupted by political and global crises.

Here are some instances when the IPL was disrupted or relocated:

1. Relocated to South Africa (2009):

In 2009, the tournament had to be entirely relocated to South Africa because its schedule overlapped with the Indian general elections and the government was unable to provide adequate security.

2. Partial relocation to UAE (2014):

A similar situation arose in 2014, when the first phase of the tournament was held in the United Arab Emirates for the same reason, before returning to Indian soil for the latter half.

3. COVID-19 Pandemic (2020):

The challenges became even more complicated in 2020, with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. The BCCI initially postponed the season before shifting the entire tournament to the UAE between September and November.

4. COVID-19 Strike Again (2021):

In 2021, the league tried to return to India under strict bio-secure protocols but the virus breached the protective bubbles, forcing the BCCI to suspend the tournament midway. Matches resumed months later, once again in the UAE.

The suspension of the 2025 edition reinforces a hard truth the league has had to confront repeatedly — cricket, no matter how beloved or lucrative, must sometimes yield to greater realities. As the nation grapples with security threats and international tension, the IPL finds itself, once again, caught in the crossfire.
