Ishan Kishan’s journey back into the Indian team has been built on patience, hard work and a strong return to domestic cricket. After a difficult period away from the national side, the wicketkeeper-batter has now established himself as an important part of India’s T20I setup.

Ishan Kishan was dropped from the India squad after taking a break from international cricket in late 2023. He had returned from South Africa and also missed Ranji Trophy matches for his domestic side Jharkhand. He was subsequently not given a BCCI central contract.
Instead of letting the setback affect him, Ishan Kishan returned to domestic cricket and focused on improving his game. His consistent performances eventually earned him a recall for the New Zealand T20I series in January this year.
Looking back at that period, Ishan Kishan said he understood where he had gone wrong and worked on correcting those mistakes. He also remained confident that strong performances in domestic cricket would eventually give him another chance at the international level. He revealed that he focused heavily on his fitness and batting while staying patient and trying to make the most of his time away from the Indian team.
Ishan Kishan also said that once he earned his place back in the national side, he did not want to worry about the possibility of being dropped again. Instead, his focus was on enjoying his cricket, contributing to the team and continuing to score runs.
That approach was on display on Tuesday when Ishan Kishan played an important role in India’s successful chase against the West Indies in Lucknow. India chased down the target of 172 in just 14.4 overs, with Ishan sharing an unbeaten 137-run partnership with T20I captain Shreyas Iyer.
Ishan Kishan explained that he has no problem taking a supporting role when his partner is in outstanding form. Against the West Indies, that was exactly the situation as Shreyas Iyer dominated the partnership. He smashed an unbeaten century, his first in T20Is, and became part of the elite group of Indian batters to score a hundred in all the three formats of international cricket.
Ishan Kishan said that because Shreyas Iyer was timing the ball so well and scoring most of the runs, his responsibility was to support him and allow the in-form batter to put pressure on the opposition bowlers. The strategy worked perfectly. Shreyas Iyer continued his aggressive approach, Ishan provided valuable support and India completed the run chase comfortably.
For Ishan Kishan, the performance is another reminder of how far he has come since his difficult period away from the Indian team. His return has been powered by domestic performances, patience and a clear focus on contributing whenever he gets his opportunity.
