The young Indian cricketer, Abhishek Sharma delivered another spectacular performance on Wednesday, lighting up the Kolkata skies and leading India to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over England in the first T20I. His explosive innings ensured India chased down England’s modest total of 132 with ease, securing a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

India’s decision to bowl first paid off as spinner Varun Chakravarthy and pacer Arshdeep Singh combined forces to claim five wickets, helping the Indian team restrict England to 132. The bowlers performed so effectively that Abhishek later remarked he had expected a target closer to 160 or 170 but credited his teammates for their exceptional effort with the ball.

When India began their chase, Abhishek wasted no time and attacked England’s bowlers right from the start. Opening the innings alongside Sanju Samson, Abhishek smashed his way to a half-century in just 20 balls. Despite losing two partners early on, the left-hander kept India’s momentum alive with an explosive knock of 79 runs off 34 deliveries, including eight sixes and five fours. Nearly 87% of his runs came in boundaries, a feat that brought comparisons to Rohit Sharma’s boundary-heavy innings of 118 runs against Sri Lanka in 2017.

The wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson also made a quick impact, scoring 26 runs and punishing Gus Atkinson with a 22-run over before being dismissed. Abhishek, however, carried on with his blistering form, guiding India to victory in just 12.5 overs. Reflecting on the chase, he praised Samson’s aggressive start and emphasised how much he enjoyed batting in such a free-flowing partnership.

Speaking after the match, Abhishek highlighted the support he received from the team management, particularly the captain and the coach, for fostering an environment where players are encouraged to express themselves. He added that it was all about expressing himself and he also credited his experience in the IPL for preparing him for such high-pressure situations.
