Italy’s T20 World Cup journey has been more than just a debut, it’s been a statement. And now, head coach John Davison wants that statement to matter even more.
On Wednesday, John Davison called for warm-up matches at global tournaments to be officially recognised, especially for associate nations trying to rise in international rankings. His appeal comes after Italy impressed in the lead-up games, defeating Canada by 10 runs and crushing the UAE by 112 runs before the main tournament began.

Speaking ahead of Italy’s final World Cup match against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, John Davison explained how difficult it is for emerging teams to improve without enough official fixtures. He suggested that when two associate sides meet in warm-up games, those matches could easily be treated as proper ranking games. According to him, it would not be hard to organise and would greatly benefit smaller cricketing nations.
Italy, playing in their first ever World Cup, have already made history. They secured their maiden World Cup victory with a dominant 10-wicket win over Nepal in Mumbai, a moment that proved they belong to the big stage.
John Davison admitted he always believed in the talent within the Italian squad. However, the real test was handling pressure in a global tournament. He feels the team has shown they can compete at this level.

Despite being proud of their campaign, John Davison insists the team is not satisfied with just participating. Italy are determined to finish strong against the West Indies.
Looking beyond the tournament, John Davison highlighted bigger challenges. Italy wants to play more cricket and improve turf facilities back home but funding and scheduling depend heavily on administrators and support from the ICC.
