During a recent episode of his quiz show “Kaun Banega Crorepati”, the superstar openly discussed his decision to step away from politics. He shared that he found the political landscape to be an incredibly challenging arena. He had entered politics from his hometown of Allahabad, now known as Prayagraj, where the people’s immense support had led him to a landslide victory in the Lok Sabha elections. Yet, he soon realised the complexities of the job. “It’s a very difficult task,” he said, describing the constant balancing act required to address various viewpoints and demands.
However, Amitabh Bachchan’s short time in politics was not without its valuable lessons. He revealed that the experience was a precious one which taught him about the true fabric of India. It was through this journey that he got to see firsthand how life thrives in the country’s rural villages. He gained a deep understanding of the people’s lives and their customs, noting the genuine respect they show to those who come to them during elections. This firsthand connection with the people, he explained, was an invaluable takeaway.
He had joined the Indian National Congress in 1984, winning his election with a record-breaking margin. His political career, however, came to an end in 1987 after he was embroiled in the Bofors scandal, which he was later cleared of.
Interestingly, his wife and actress Jaya Bachchan continues to be an active politician today as a member of the Samajwadi Party.
