Jasprit Bumrah Reached 100 T20I Wickets, But Was The Milestone Clouded By An Umpiring Error?

Jasprit Bumrah has long been the heartbeat of India’s bowling attack, a cricketer who blends precision, pace and calmness even in the tensest moments. His run-up is familiar, his Yorkers feared and his ability to change the mood of a match almost unmatched.

Over the years, he has become the kind of bowler who doesn’t just take wickets but shifts momentum, often leaving batters puzzled and spectators in awe. It was fitting, then, that his latest milestone arrived on a night already charged with anticipation, although it did not unfold without drama.

During the first T20I against South Africa in Cuttack on December 9, Jasprit Bumrah became only the second Indian bowler to reach 100 wickets in T20 internationals. The achievement came in the 11th over of South Africa’s chase of 176, with the visitors already struggling at 68/6.

Suryakumar Yadav brought Jasprit Bumrah back to finish the job and the pacer delivered a steep short ball that saw Dewald Brevis skying a catch to cover. India celebrated, Dewald Brevis walked off frustrated and it seemed like a clean, historic moment.

But seconds later, replays of Jasprit Bumrah’s landing foot cast a shadow over the wicket. The footage made it appear that his foot had crossed the crease entirely, which would normally make the delivery a no-ball. The third umpire, however, did not call it, and play continued.

Commentators expressed confusion, while some felt the call was extremely close and may have been judged legal on careful review. Regardless of the debate, the dismissal officially stood as his 100th T20I wicket.

Jasprit Bumrah didn’t dwell on the moment and struck again just three balls later, removing Keshav Maharaj to claim his 101st wicket. With this, he inched closer to Arshdeep Singh, the only Indian ahead of him with 107 wickets, though Bumrah boasts a slightly better average across fewer matches.

South Africa, shaken by the double blow, collapsed from 70/8 to 74 all out, their lowest total in T20I history. India won by massive 101 runs, marking their biggest victory over the Proteas and sealing an evening defined by dominance, drama and yet another chapter in Jasprit Bumrah’s remarkable career.
