Jasprit Bumrah made a massive impact with both bat and ball during the second ODI between India and England at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Thursday, July 16, producing a record-breaking performance for the visitors.
Leading India’s pace attack in the three-match ODI series, the 32-year-old right-arm fast bowler struck on the very first ball of England’s innings. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed opener Ben Duckett, who was caught behind by wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan for a golden duck.

With that dismissal, Jasprit Bumrah became the first Indian bowler to take a wicket on the opening ball of an innings against England in ODIs. Ben Duckett had scored 43 runs from 45 balls in the first ODI at Edgbaston on Tuesday, July 14, but could not get off the mark in the must-win second match for England.
Jasprit Bumrah had already made valuable contributions earlier in the day with the bat. Coming in at No. 10, he remained unbeaten on 20 off just 13 balls, smashing three fours and one six. He also shared a 23-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Shreyas Iyer, who top-scored for India with 66.

The highlight of Jasprit Bumrah’s innings came in the 43rd over when he attacked England pacer Saqib Mahmood, hitting him for three boundaries and a six. His late cameo helped India push their total beyond the 230-run mark.
India were eventually bowled out for 233 in 44 overs. Virat Kohli played a fluent knock of 65, while captain Rohit Sharma’s struggles with the bat continued. India’s middle order suffered a dramatic collapse, losing four wickets for just 15 runs in the space of 26 deliveries.
England’s bowling attack was led by Jofra Archer, who returned figures of 3/47 in his 10 overs. Saqib Mahmood picked up 2/52 in nine overs, while Gus Atkinson also claimed three wickets, finishing with 3/50 from his nine-over spell.
Despite India’s batting collapse, Jasprit Bumrah’s all-round effort and his historic first-ball breakthrough gave the visitors an ideal start in a crucial contest.
