Cricket often demands total commitment but sometimes life calls for attention beyond the field. That was the case for Jasprit Bumrah who was unavailable for the third T20I between India and South Africa in Dharamshala on December 15. The match was part of the ongoing five-game series and Bumrah’s absence was noticed immediately, especially as it came just days after he reached a major career milestone of 100 T20I wickets on December 9, becoming only the second Indian bowler to do so.

At the toss at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, the Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah had missed the game due to personal reasons. He also mentioned that Axar Patel was unavailable because of illness, making it a forced double change for the team. Soon after, the BCCI issued a statement, explaining that Jasprit Bumrah had returned home and would not be available for the match, adding that updates on his return would be shared later.

A day after India’s convincing seven-wicket win in Dharamshala which gave them a 2-1 lead in the series, more clarity emerged. A senior BCCI source revealed that Jasprit Bumrah had to travel back because a very close family member was hospitalised. The situation, according to the official, understandably took priority over cricket.

The board indicated that Jasprit Bumrah could return for the fourth match in Lucknow or the fifth game in Ahmedabad if things improve but the immediate focus remains on his family member’s recovery. No firm timeline has been set, keeping his availability open-ended.

In Jasprit Bumrah’s absence, young pacer Harshit Rana was brought into the playing XI. The Delhi fast bowler made the most of the opportunity, finishing with two wickets for 34 runs in his four overs. If Bumrah remains unavailable for the fourth T20I on December 17, Harshit Rana is expected to retain his place in the side.

India also suffered another setback with Axar Patel. After missing the Dharamshala game, he was ruled out of the remaining two matches due to illness. Bengal all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed has been added to the squad as his replacement.

As India push forward in the series, the situation serves as a reminder that even at the highest level, players are human first and sometimes the game must wait.
