The first morning of the India–South Africa Test at Eden Gardens unfolded with the kind of intensity only Jasprit Bumrah can generate. Even before the Kolkata crowd had fully settled in, Jasprit Bumrah had already stamped his authority on the match. He bowled with precision, confidence and a touch of theatre that instantly tilted the momentum in India’s favour.
Leading the attack, Jasprit Bumrah sent back both South African openers within the first hour. Ryan Rickelton had his stumps rattled by a trademark Bumrah delivery, while Aiden Markram fell soon after when Rishabh Pant completed a sharp catch in the 13th over. India were buzzing and Bumrah wasn’t done yet.

On the final ball of that same over, he struck Temba Bavuma on the pads and made a loud appeal for LBW. The umpire wasn’t convinced and Bumrah turned to his teammates to discuss a possible review. In the middle of this conversation, something he muttered under his breath was picked up by the stump mic, quickly spreading across social media and adding a touch of drama to the moment. Though his comment (“Bauna bhi hai b*******”) was casual banter, it instantly became one of the most talked about clips of the morning.

Temba Bavuma, who recently returned to South Africa’s Test side after missing their series against Pakistan due to injury, walked in at No. 4 but couldn’t settle. He managed only a few deliveries before Kuldeep Yadav found the breakthrough India needed. On the sixth ball of the 16th over, Bavuma edged a turning delivery and Dhruv Jurel held a clean catch at leg slip.
By the time Bavuma walked back after scoring just three runs, South Africa were struggling at 71 for 3. India’s bowlers had set the tone and Bumrah’s fiery spell ensured that the first session belonged entirely to the hosts.
