Indian cinema is entering a new creative phase where imagination is finally taking center stage. Filmmakers are no longer limiting fantasy to brief mythological references or children’s stories. Instead, they are blending ancient beliefs, folklore, astrology and futuristic ideas to create rich cinematic worlds that feel both rooted and fresh. With several ambitious projects lined up, 2026 is shaping up to be a breakthrough year for fantasy films in India.
1. Kalki 2:
One of the most talked about releases is the next chapter of the Kalki franchise. After the massive global response to the first film, director Nag Ashwin is expanding the story on an even larger scale. Featuring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan and backed by Vyjayanthi Movies, the sequel continues its bold vision of reimagining a divine prophecy in a dystopian future. The film brings together ancient spiritual concepts and advanced technology, offering spectacle along with deeper philosophical questions.
2. Naagzilla
Releasing in 2026, Naagzilla stars Kartik Aaryan in a fantasy entertainer inspired by Indian serpent folklore. The film is directed by Mrighdeep Singh Lamba and produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions along with Mahaveer Jain. Blending mythology, action and humour, it aims to present a mass-friendly fantasy with modern storytelling and high visual appeal.
3. Vishwambhara
Vishwambhara, scheduled for a 2026 release, is a large-scale fantasy epic starring Chiranjeevi. Directed by Vassishta and produced by UV Creations, the film is rooted in mythological themes and grand heroism. With lavish visuals and emotional storytelling, it is positioned as a prestigious, big-budget project in Chiranjeevi’s celebrated career.
4. Rahu Ketu:
Taking a completely different tone is Rahu Ketu, a fantasy that uses humour to explore astrology and destiny. Produced under Zee Studios and BLive Productions, the film stars Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma, Shalini Pandey and Chunky Panday. Drawing inspiration from the mythical shadow planets, the story presents fate and karma through a light, entertaining lens. Its modern setting and playful storytelling make it one of the most unique fantasy films expected in 2026.
5. Mahakali:
The mythological universe launched with Hanu-Man is also expanding with Mahakali. Directed by Prasanth Varma and produced by RKD Studios, the film stars Bhoomi Shetty as the powerful Goddess Kali. Framed as a mythological superhero tale, the story combines spiritual symbolism with contemporary narrative styles. With a strong female lead rooted in Shakti mythology, Mahakali promises a visually striking and emotionally intense experience.
6. Adhira:

Another major project, Adhira, dives into ancient warrior legends and folklore. Recently unveiled by Prasanth Varma, the film stars SJ Suryah and Kalyan Dasari in lead roles. Designed as a large-scale fantasy-action epic, it blends stylised action, modern visual effects and myth-inspired storytelling, already making it one of the most anticipated films of the year.
7. Vvan:
Rounding off the list is Vvan, a dark fantasy thriller starring Sidharth Malhotra. Directed by Deepak Mishra and produced by Balaji Motion Pictures, the film explores fear, belief and the supernatural through folklore and mysticism. With its intense atmosphere and psychological depth, Vvan signals a bold shift away from traditional fantasy.
Together, these films suggest that Indian fantasy cinema is no longer experimental — it is evolving into a powerful genre ready to dominate the big screen.
