Rohit Sharma’s brilliant century against England at Lord’s may not have been enough to stop India from losing, but it certainly reignited the debate surrounding his future in ODI cricket. Following the veteran batter’s impressive knock, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif strongly criticised the retirement speculation and backed Rohit to decide his own future.

Ahead of the third ODI, reports suggested that the 39-year-old had been informed by the BCCI selectors that he was no longer part of their plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, with the management reportedly looking to test younger players. The speculation, which had reportedly started during the IPL 2026, intensified after the second ODI, with claims that the Lord’s match could be Rohit Sharma’s final appearance in the format.
However, Rohit silenced the rumours in style by smashing a magnificent 138 on a challenging batting surface. Despite India’s defeat, the innings once again highlighted his experience, skill and ability to deliver under pressure.
Reacting to the performance, Mohd. Kaif said that the century was a fitting answer to those questioning Rohit Sharma’s future. He jokingly asked the critics, “Hogaya retirement? Katwali naak?”

He emphasised that a player of Rohit’s stature has earned the right to decide when to retire and should not be forced into making that decision because of outside pressure. Kaif also praised the veteran for producing such a memorable innings despite the intense scrutiny surrounding him.
After the match, Rohit Sharma also addressed the ongoing speculation, saying that external discussions and criticism do not distract him from his responsibilities. He explained that his focus remains on performing for India, while public debate is simply a part of professional sport.
Kaif also urged India captain Shubman Gill and the BCCI to publicly back Rohit Sharma. According to him, clear support from the captain, coach and cricket board would allow Rohit to play with greater confidence instead of constantly facing questions about his future.

The former cricketer added that Rohit is currently playing under immense pressure, with many waiting for him to fail. Despite that, he still managed to score a century at Lord’s. Kaif believes that if Rohit receives complete backing from the team management and selectors, he can continue producing exceptional performances and contribute significantly to India’s success.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup still on the horizon, Rohit’s latest century has once again sparked discussions about his future. While the retirement rumours continue, his performance at Lord’s proved that he still has plenty to offer in the 50-over format.
