Despite Delhi climbing to the top of the table, Cheteshwar Pujara expressed that KL Rahul’s innings lacked the urgency expected of a seasoned campaigner, especially given the match situation and his new position in the batting order.
Reflecting on Rahul’s cautious knock, Pujara suggested that the batter seemed more focused on preserving his wicket than seizing the moment to accelerate the scoring rate. He felt Rahul should have capitalised on the time he had spent at the crease, noting that once a player is well-set and has adjusted to pitch conditions, there is a greater expectation to push the pace.
While Rahul’s transition to a No. 4 spot is still unfolding, Pujara observed that the shift requires a different mindset, especially during the middle overs where a balance between caution and aggression is crucial. Pujara emphasised that although Rahul tends to play freely during the powerplay, there appeared to be a reluctance to take risks once that phase passed, making his innings feel more restrained than required.
Rahul’s recent performances have drawn some scrutiny. In the previous match against Mumbai Indians, he managed just 15 runs from 13 deliveries before falling to Karn Sharma. In this encounter with Rajasthan Royals, he scored 38 off 32 before Jofra Archer dismissed him, leaving fans and analysts wondering if a more attacking approach might have helped push Delhi’s total even higher.
Despite the questions surrounding Rahul’s tempo, he and Tristan Stubbs played pivotal roles in the Super Over. Together, they held their nerve, with Rahul sending one to the boundary and Stubbs smashing a six, sealing a memorable win for the Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium — their first at the venue this season.
Earlier in the game, Delhi got off to a promising start with a 63-run stand between Abishek Porel and Rahul.
