Indian cricketer Kuldeep Yadav’s absence from India’s playing XI continues to raise questions and former India batter Mohammad Kaif has now made a strong statement about the left-arm wrist-spinner’s future.
After Kuldeep Yadav was left out of India’s team for the third ODI against England at Lord’s on Sunday (July 19), Kaif expressed his disappointment over the decision. He suggested that Kuldeep may have to start thinking about moving on from international cricket, pointing out that he was not picked despite the absence of several key bowlers.
Kuldeep Yadav last played an ODI against Afghanistan at New Chandigarh last month. Since then, he has missed several away tours under head coach Gautam Gambhir and was also left out throughout the three-match ODI series against England. With Washington Sundar unavailable because of injury, many expected Kuldeep to return to the playing XI. However, India chose to field four fast bowlers along with Axar Patel as the only spin-bowling all-rounder.
Mohammed Kaif questioned the decision, highlighting that Kuldeep Yadav has taken 194 wickets in 118 ODIs. He also felt India’s bowling attack at Lord’s lacked variety and believed a left-arm wrist-spinner could have made a difference.
India’s bowling performance added to the debate as England posted a massive 387/3 in 50 overs. Even though the pitch offered movement early, consistent bounce and reverse swing later in the innings, the Indian pace attack struggled to make an impact, while Axar Patel was handled comfortably by the England batters.
Explaining the team combination at the toss, captain Shubman Gill said India preferred four seamers because they believed fast bowlers are more effective than spinners during the middle overs on that surface.
Kuldeep Yadav’s place in the team has also been affected by the lack of a regular pace-bowling all-rounder. When Hardik Pandya is fit and available, India gets better balance, allowing the team to include a specialist spinner like Kuldeep by reducing either an extra seamer or a spin-bowling all-rounder. However, with both Hardik and Nitish Kumar Reddy unavailable due to injuries, Gautam Gambhir-led team management has preferred a more conservative bowling combination, leaving Kuldeep Yadav out once again.
