Cricket is certainly a very unpredictable game and the best example that we can give to prove this statement correct is today’s match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe which was played at Optus Stadium, Perth. Though earlier Ireland also defeated England in a Super 12 match, it was because of Duckworth Lewis method. However in today’s match, it was superb performance of the Zimbabwean cricketers which helped them in defeating an Asian team which was considered as one of the favourites to win the tournament.

This is the second defeat of Pakistan in the tournament, earlier it got defeated by arch-rivals India in their first match of the tournament and now things look murkier for Pakistan as far as reaching the semi-finals is concerned. Babar Azam, the skipper of Pakistan, was already getting slammed for not performing well against India and now his disappointing performance against Zimbabwe has further angered the Pakistani cricket fans.

As soon as Pakistan lost the match, the micro-blogging site Twitter was flooded with reactions, especially netizens from India are leaving no stone unturned in roasting their neighbours. Here are some selected reactions:

Talking about the match, Zimbabwe won the toss and decided to bat first. The team got a steady start as the openers Wesley Madhevere (17 runs, 13 balls, 3 fours) and skipper Craig Ervine (19 runs, 19 balls, 2 fours) produced a partnership of 42 runs for the first wicket but after they both got out, wickets started falling on a regular basis. It was Zimbabwe batter Sean Williams only who could show some resistance to the Pakistani bowlers as he scored 31 runs (28 balls, 3 fours) and helped his team in putting up a competitive total of 130/8 on the score board. Mohammad Wasim dismissed 4 batters while Shadab Khan sent back 3 batters to the dug-out.

The target of 131 looked pretty easy to achieve for the Pakistani team but it started on a poor note as skipper Babar Azam got out on the personal score of 4 runs and another opener Mohammad Rizwan also got out quite early at the score of 14 (16 balls, 1 four & 1 six). While Shan Masood once again performed well as he scored 44 runs (38 balls, 3 fours), he didn’t get the much needed support from the other side and Pakistan kept on losing wickets quite regularly. Mohammad Nawaz kept the hopes of his team alive but he got out on the second-last ball of the 20th over when Pakistan needed 3 runs to win in 2 balls. Though Shaheen Afridi tried to score winning runs on the last ball, he got run out and Pakistan suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe cricketer Sikandar Raza who is of Pakistani origin was adjudged as the Player of the Match because he not only scored 9 runs and took 3 wickets but he also an played important role in Shaheen Afridi’s run out.

Many TVs will be broken today in Pakistan and Pakistani Twitter will troll Babar Azam and other Pak cricketers mercilessly but we should understand that winning and losing are parts of the game and Zimbabwe deserves all the credit of this win.

Well played Zimbabwe!!!!
