Madhuri Dixit is currently receiving widespread appreciation for her latest Netflix release, Maa Behen. The pulp comedy has been earning positive reviews not only for its humour but also for the social commentary woven into the story. The film highlights the judgments women often face simply for being themselves and sheds light on the casual slut-shaming that many continue to experience in everyday life.
The theme of scrutiny portrayed in the film is something Madhuri says she can personally relate to. In a recent interview, the actress spoke about the criticism and judgment she encountered when she began her career in the 1980s.
According to Madhuri Dixit, being a public figure often means being subjected to constant opinions and assumptions from others. She recalled that when she entered the film industry, many people commented on her appearance and felt she was too thin. The actress said people were quick to make judgments without knowing the person behind the public image, adding that body-shaming has long been a reality for women in the entertainment industry.
Madhuri Dixit also pointed out that such comments are not limited to the film world and are common in everyday life. She observed that in India, discussions about a person’s weight often become one of the first things people notice or mention. Whether someone gains weight or loses it, they frequently become the subject of unsolicited remarks and criticism.

Despite facing such scrutiny, Madhuri Dixit believes she was fortunate to begin her career in an era before social media. While judgments and criticism certainly existed then, she explained that celebrities were not exposed to them in the same way they are today. The absence of social media meant that negative opinions did not reach public figures as directly or as constantly as they do now.
The actress believes that self-love and self-confidence are essential in dealing with criticism. She noted that social media platforms, combined with the anonymity they offer, have made it easier for people to make harsh comments. However, she feels individuals should focus on their work, passions and the things that bring them happiness rather than paying too much attention to negativity. For Madhuri Dixit, accepting and valuing oneself remains the best way to deal with prejudice and constant scrutiny.
Meanwhile, an old rumour involving singer Suresh Wadkar has resurfaced. Reports had long claimed that he rejected a marriage proposal from Madhuri’s family because he felt she was “too thin”. Recently, Suresh Wadkar dismissed the story during an interview. While acknowledging that Madhuri Dixit was very slim during the early days of her career, including around the time of her debut film Abodh, he clarified that no such proposal had ever reached him and therefore there was never any question of him rejecting it.
As for Maa Behen, the film continues to receive praise from audiences and critics alike, with many particularly applauding Madhuri Dixit’s comic timing and her refreshing, never-seen-before avatar on screen.
