South African cricket icon Mark Boucher, regarded as one of the finest wicketkeeper-batters in the game’s history, continues to be an influential voice in world cricket even after retirement. With over 500 dismissals in Tests and an aggressive batting style, Boucher carved out a legendary career. Since stepping away from playing, he’s turned to coaching and commentary, staying closely connected to the evolving cricket landscape.
In a recent interaction on a sports portal, he named four young players he believes have the potential to be future stars. Surprisingly, he didn’t include India’s current Test captain Shubman Gill in his list despite Gill’s brilliant recent form.
In his first two Test matches as captain, Shubman Gill scored an impressive 585 runs and his consistency with the bat in the England series helped him rise 15 spots in the ICC rankings to become the No. 6 Test batter in the world.
While responding to a question about three young players who could shine in the future, Mark Boucher chose to name four: Tilak Varma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis.
All the four cricketers made their mark initially through the Under-19 World Cup before stepping onto the international stage. Yashasvi Jaiswal is now a regular in both India’s Test and T20I sides, while Tilak Varma features in India’s T20I setup. On the South African front, both Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis have found spots across all the three formats for their national team.
During the same session, Mark Boucher was asked to name three cricketers for his all-time T20 XI. He picked India’s Suryakumar Yadav, South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen and the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. When asked about the best wicketkeeper after his playing era, Mark Boucher acknowledged MS Dhoni for his skills standing up to the stumps and picked Quinton de Kock when it came to keeping to pace bowling.
He also shared his thoughts on the most complete cricketer in today’s game. For white-ball cricket, Mark Boucher named India’s Hardik Pandya and England’s Ben Stokes as players who stand out for their all-round capabilities.
