Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set for a major change ahead of the IPL 2027, with long-time head coach Stephen Fleming no longer a part of the franchise. After nearly two decades with the team, Fleming ended his association with CSK earlier this year, bringing an end to one of the most successful coaching partnerships in the IPL history.
Stephen Fleming had been associated with CSK since the tournament’s first season in 2007. He initially joined the franchise as a player but moved into the coaching setup after just one season. Alongside captain MS Dhoni, he played a crucial role in building CSK into one of the most successful teams in the history of the tournament.
During Stephen Fleming’s time with the franchise, CSK won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies. His partnership with Dhoni also produced several memorable campaigns and helped establish CSK as an IPL powerhouse.
With Stephen Fleming now taking charge of the England men’s Test team, CSK are searching for a new head coach. Several names have already been linked with the position, including former CSK captain MS Dhoni. However, CSK legend Matthew Hayden believes the franchise should consider another familiar name — Dinesh Karthik.
Speaking to a sports magazine, Matthew Hayden suggested that Dinesh Karthik could be an ideal choice for the role. He feels the former India wicketkeeper-batter is ready to take up a major coaching responsibility and believes CSK would benefit from having a local figure at the helm.
Matthew Hayden also stressed the importance of having someone who understands the culture and identity of Chennai. While international coaches have become common across IPL franchises, he believes a team as closely connected to its city as CSK could benefit from a Chennai-based coach.
Dinesh Karthik, who was born in Chennai, fits that description perfectly. Interestingly, despite his strong connection with the city, he never played for CSK during his IPL career. He represented six different franchises during his time as a player. Following his retirement, Dinesh Karthik has remained involved in cricket through commentary and his role with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), where he has worked as a mentor.
Matthew Hayden also described CSK’s decision to move on from Stephen Fleming as a bold one. He praised the successful partnership between Fleming and MS Dhoni, pointing out the enormous success they achieved together and the fact that CSK matched Mumbai Indians’ tally of five IPL titles.
Despite the emotional end to Stephen Fleming’s long CSK tenure, Matthew Hayden believes the franchise has made a brave decision and is now looking forward to seeing who takes over the important role.
For CSK, the next appointment will be a major one. After years of stability under Stephen Fleming and Dhoni, the franchise will enter a new era, with the identity of Fleming’s successor likely to play a key role in shaping the team’s future.
