Meet Real Life Phunsukh Wangdu! Student Helped Woman Deliver Baby On Train Using WhatsApp

Remember Aamir Khan’s movie “3 Idiots”? There was a scene in which Aamir and few engineering students helped Mona Singh in delivering her baby and they got help from a qualified doctor by using a webcam. In a similar sort of situation, Vipin Khadse (24), the final year student of MBBS, helped a lady in giving birth to a baby boy in Ahmedabad-Puri Express and he received instructions from his seniors through WhatsApp.

Vipin is not a qualified doctor as of now and he is undergoing training at the Nagpur-based Government Medical College & Hospital but he has performed a very complicated delivery in a very good manner. On Friday, 24 years old Chitralekha and her husband, both labourers, boarded the train from Ahmedabad as they were going to Raipur, Chhattisgarh, but on the way, Chitralekha started having labour pain.

Vipin told TOI that the train halted 30 km from Nagpur, near Wardha junction, as a relative of Chitralekha pulled the chain. He said,

“The ticket collector and guard were looking for a doctor on the train. Initially, I kept quiet presuming there could be some experienced doctor. But, when they came for a second round of inquiry, I offered to help.”

Chitralekha was bleeding heavily when Vipin reached there; however, as a mark of humanity, the other passengers departed from the compartment and the lady passengers turned the compartment into a makeshift delivery room. Vipin told,

“The delivery was complicated because instead of the head, the baby’s shoulder was hanging out of the vagina. I uploaded a photo in a WhatsApp group of doctors for help. A senior resident Shikha Malik guided me on the phone to conduct the delivery. I had to use chilled water bottles to stop her bleeding. The amniotic fluid had completely dried. A midwife on the train helped me.”

Vipin wants to become a surgeon in future but he maintains that every doctor should have the knowledge of delivering a baby to help a woman in need.

When the train reached Nagpur, a team of doctors led by a woman doctor took control of the situation and new parents were given the permission to travel with proper medication.
