India’s coaching staff could soon undergo another major change, with former Assam cricketer Subhadeep Ghosh emerging as the leading candidate to join the national team as assistant coach. The development comes after the contracts of T Dilip and Ryan ten Doeschate ended, following which both were relieved of their duties, according to a report.
The BCCI is expected to appoint a new fielding coach before India’s tour of Sri Lanka. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board is currently considering two or three candidates and expects to finalise the appointment within the next couple of days. Generalising his remarks, Devajit Saikia said discussions are ongoing with a small group of candidates and that the new fielding coach is expected to be in place before the Sri Lanka tour.
According to the report, Subhadeep Ghosh is the frontrunner for the role. The Assam-born coach has been part of the BCCI setup for the past six to seven years, with his association dating back to Rahul Dravid’s tenure at the National Cricket Academy.
Hailing from Digboi in Assam, Subhadeep Ghosh made his first-class and List A debut for Assam during the 1994-95 season and played his final match in the 2004-05 season. During his playing career, he represented both Assam and Railways in domestic cricket before moving into coaching.
Over the years, Subhadeep Ghosh has built extensive experience as a coach and support staff member across several Indian teams. His work with different national squads has given him valuable exposure to the demands of international cricket.
Appointed in 2020, Subhadeep Ghosh played a key role in preparing the Indian women’s team for important overseas tours. He was also part of the India Under-19 team’s support staff during their World Cup campaign in South Africa, served as India’s fielding coach during the gold medal-winning campaign at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou and was included in the support staff for the recent tour of Zimbabwe.
If appointed, Subhadeep Ghosh will take over as India’s fielding coach ahead of the Sri Lanka tour, marking another significant step in his coaching journey with the BCCI.
