The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a heartwarming video capturing an intimate and emotional day for the Indian captain Shubman Gill at Edgbaston, where India is playing against England in the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
The video, shared on Thursday, not only highlighted Shubman Gill’s interactions with the media and fans both at the stadium and inside the team hotel but also featured an audio message from his parents — Lakhwinder Singh and Keart Gill.
Shubman Gill had scripted history earlier in the match by scoring a remarkable 269 off 387 deliveries. This innings stood out as his highest in Test cricket, also becoming the top score by any Indian captain and the highest individual Test score by an Indian outside Asia. His father Lakhwinder Singh expressed immense pride and calm upon watching his son’s extraordinary knock. Reflecting on Shubman’s early years, he shared a nostalgic note but couldn’t help mentioning that his son had just missed out on a triple century.
“Shubman beta, well played. I really enjoyed watching your batting. It gave me a lot of peace of mind. When you were younger, under 16 or 19, you used to bat like that. And I felt very proud,” Lakhwinder said in the video message recorded on Shubman Gill’s phone.
His mother Keart Gill added with warmth and affection, “It was very nice to see your batting. Keep going. God bless you.”
Reacting to the messages, Shubman Gill admitted how deeply they touched him. He spoke candidly about the bond he shares with his father and how his cricketing journey is inseparable from that relationship.
“I went to the pool for some recovery, came back, and showered… This message means a lot to me,” Gill said. “I think growing up, I played almost all of my cricket for my dad. In the sense that it was because of him that I started playing cricket. And the only person, he and my best friend, whom I practiced with. These are the only two people, when it comes to my cricket, that I care about and that I listen to. So, it means a lot coming from him. But he did also tell me that I missed my triple century. Hopefully, we will end this match on a great note,” he added with a smile.
