We have heard a lot about the need and importance of gender equality in the discussions conducted on news channels or the events organised to find out the solution of gender inequality.
But is really something concrete happening in the direction of bringing gender equality in the society or are these discussions just wastage of time, money and other resources?
Cricket can easily be called the most loved sport in India and some Indian men cricketers are listed among the top 100 richest sportspersons of the world. But why can’t we find any Indian woman cricketer in this list? The reason is pretty simple – the organization which should have been on forefront for keeping both the cricket teams (men and women) on the same level is encouraging gender inequality to a big extent.
The Indian women cricket team is presently in Malaysia playing in the Asia Cup 2018. Recently, India defeated Malaysia in their first match; Mithali Raj scored 97 runs not out and got the player of the match title.
However, cricket fans lost their temper when they saw that Mithali Raj has been given approximately Rs. 16,000 (USD 250) as the reward for player of the match while the male cricketers get something near to about Rs. 1.60 lakh (USD 2500) for the man of the match award.
The official Instagram account of Indian Cricket Team shared the pic with caption, “A comprehensive 142-run win for India against Malaysia in their first game of the #AsiaCup
@mithaliraj scored a 97*(69) to bag the player of the match award 💪😎👌”
People called it injustice to the women cricketers and insult of Mithali Raj. Here are few selected reactions:
