Royal Challengers Bengaluru, one of the most passionately supported IPL franchises, have built their identity around a loyal fan base that has stood by them for nearly two decades. Known for their electrifying performances and undying spirit, RCB’s connection with its supporters has always been central to its narrative. But this bond carries with it a story of loss that has now become part of the team’s legacy.

In a recent interview, RCB’s director of cricket Mo Bobat described the events of the June stampede in Bengaluru as a tragedy that will remain etched in the franchise’s heritage. He reflected on how devastating it was that the victims were the very fans for whom the players aspired to win. For him, the incident underscored both the deep passion surrounding the game and the responsibility the team carries in representing its supporters.

The disaster claimed the lives of eleven people, many of them teenagers, who had gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for the team’s victory parade. The event, meant to be a celebration, turned into heartbreak as both the franchise and the state authorities faced criticism for poor management. Investigations by the government revealed lapses in handling the massive turnout, and legal proceedings against officials from RCB and the Karnataka State Cricket Association remain ongoing.

Mo Bobat emphasised that while cricket is about joy and collective pride, the tragedy has added a solemn layer to RCB’s story. He spoke of the need to honor the memories of those who lost their lives, suggesting that their experiences will forever be woven into the team’s history. Though RCB had offered compensation of Rs 10 lakh to each victim’s family, the gesture was viewed as modest in comparison to their substantial revenues.

Uncertainty also surrounds the team’s future at their home ground. The Chinnaswamy Stadium has been deemed unfit for large gatherings, forcing several domestic tournaments and international fixtures to relocate. Whether it will be ready in time for the IPL 2026 is still unknown. For now, the tragedy stands as both a scar and a reminder, an inseparable part of RCB’s legacy that binds triumph and grief together.
