India’s preparations for the Asia Cup are in full swing and bowling coach Morne Morkel believes left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav is setting the right example with his professionalism and commitment. The former South African fast bowler feels Kuldeep knows exactly how to prepare himself for the demands of T20 cricket.
Kuldeep Yadav last featured in the shortest format during the T20 World Cup final earlier this year in Barbados, where India edged past South Africa by seven runs to lift the trophy. Despite his impressive record of 69 wickets from 40 T20 internationals, he was not part of the recent Test series in England which ended in a 2-2 draw. His return to the squad now comes with added competition, particularly from fellow wrist-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy who was instrumental in India’s Champions Trophy victory in the UAE earlier this year.
Speaking during India’s training session at the ICC Academy in Dubai, Morne Morkel praised Kuldeep Yadav’s work ethic. He explained that even in England where the spinner had little game time, he never stopped putting in the effort during practice. According to Morne Morkel, Kuldeep Yadav has bowled enough overs throughout his career to understand how to get himself ready for white-ball formats. The coach emphasised the importance of training with purpose, setting goals in practice and carrying that mindset into matches.
Conditions in the UAE are expected to test the players, with extreme heat and fresh pitches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi adding to the challenge. Morne Morkel said that the team would carefully assess the surfaces before finalising their bowling plans. He recalled how during the Champions Trophy the wickets had looked worn out after heavy use but this time, he expects more grass cover and livelier tracks. He added that the real picture would only become clear once the tournament begins.
Beyond tactics and surface conditions, Morne Morkel also underlined the value of balance and planning in a long season. He spoke about the need for players to spend time with family, recharge during breaks and work closely with fitness experts, fielding coaches and head coach Gautam Gambhir to keep improving as a unit. According to him, building a successful team involves constant discussion and planning across formats, whether it is red-ball or white-ball cricket.
For now, though, the focus is firmly on the Asia Cup, and with Kuldeep Yadav leading the spin department with renewed confidence, India will hope to carry their winning momentum forward.
