The story begins with a young child Anjali who gets to read a letter from her mother which she wrote before dying. Following her words in the letter, she brings together her widowed father, Rahul, and his friend Anjali. The film had an exceptional setting with a popular soundtrack and impressive direction.

It follows the story of Rahul, an adopted older son of a wealthy couple.  However,  he is asked to leave the family when he marries a middle-class woman. One of the controversial films made by Karan Johar is Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. It was based on the theme of marital Infidelity and complex relationships that wasn’t taken well by a particular section of the audience. 

Based in New York, it follows the story of Dev and Maya, who face problems in their marriage. They meet, talk about their issues, turn into friends, and end up as lovers. Despite mixed reviews for its theme and approach, it succeeded commercially. Moreover, its soundtrack was praised by the audience. 

4. My Name is Khan (2010)

The attacks of 9/11 in the USA shook the whole world, changing many lives forever. Based on the lines of that incident, My Name is Khan is a fictional story. It differs slightly from the regular Karan Johar Directorial as it has a strong theme. 

It is based on the story of Rizwan, a man with Asperger’s syndrome. He falls in love and marries Mandira. However, their relationship turns upside down with the 9/11 attacks. Following that, he journeys to change people’s perspective on his community. The film is majority shot across Los Angeles and San Francisco.  

My name is Khan and received appreciation for its theme, direction, music, screenplay, cinematography, and performances. 

5. Student of the Year (2012)

After making My Name is Khan, which revolved around a serious subject, Karan Johar made a fun and light-hearted film, Student of the Year. He decided to work with a fresh cast that launched Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra, and Alia Bhatt on the Big Screens. 

It follows the lives of students, particularly the leads competing in the Student of the Year competition, which affects their personal lives too. Simultaneously, two friends fall in love with the same girl hampering their relationship. The film received mixed reviews and made decent earnings at the box office. 

6. Ae Dil hai Mushkil (2016)

Heartbreak is challenging and changes you as a person from within. Sometimes it changes you for the better, and many times for the worse. So, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil explores this concept. It is based on the plot of Alizeh, an independent woman who becomes friends with Ayan, a naive musician. They try to overcome their breakups, form a strong bond, and fall in Love. 

However, things take a turn when Alizeh’s ex-boyfriend comes back, and she marries him. Ayan is heartbroken, changing as a person, and their lives undergo multiple transformations later. The film got mixed reviews. But earned praise for its direction, cinematography, and cast performances. Notably, its soundtrack topped the charts making a place in the hearts of audiences.
