Zaheer Khan is set to begin a new chapter in his cricket career after taking charge as the head coach of Chennai Super Kings and MS Dhoni played an important role in bringing the former India pacer to the franchise.
Zaheer Khan has replaced Stephen Fleming, bringing an end to the New Zealand great’s nearly two-decade association with the five-time IPL champions. His appointment came as a surprise after CSK had reportedly considered several candidates, including overseas options.
Speaking on CSK’s official YouTube channel, Zaheer Khan explained that the process of joining the franchise was simple and direct. He said the team’s leadership, including MS Dhoni, was important in understanding the direction CSK wanted to take. According to Zaheer, the initial conversation with the franchise was mainly about his availability. Once that was established, he quickly made it clear that he was interested in taking up the opportunity and viewed it as a privilege.
Media reports have also stated that MS Dhoni recommended Zaheer Khan’s name to the CSK management. Dhoni continues to play a major tactical role within the franchise.
Zaheer Khan now faces a major challenge with CSK after the team failed to meet expectations over the last three years. He will have the responsibility of working with a new group of young players and helping build a competitive team, with only a mini-auction remaining to strengthen the squad.
The former India pacer admitted that the importance of the job and the expectations of CSK’s passionate supporters have already made the responsibility feel significant.
