Some memories stay so deeply etched that time cannot dim their glow. For MS Dhoni, one such moment comes from the night India lifted the 2011 World Cup, a night that still lives vividly in his mind even more than a decade later. Speaking at an event on Tuesday, the former India captain found himself transported back to the Wankhede Stadium, where a crowd united in a chant that, even today, feels almost unreal to him.

Dhoni recalled how the stadium suddenly erupted into a sweeping chorus of “Vande Mataram” just minutes before the final delivery of the match. Though Wankhede isn’t the largest venue, he remembered how the sound stayed trapped inside, becoming louder as it travelled from one corner to another, almost like a wave made of voices. Standing in the middle of the field, preparing for the climax of a match that had the entire country holding its breath, he described the moment as the most emotional atmosphere he had ever experienced. It wasn’t just the chant but everything around it, the long wait for a World Cup, the tension of the chase and the weight of expectations which made that moment unforgettable.

He feels certain that India will keep winning major tournaments including World Cup, men’s and women’s, at home and abroad, and they may win 100 times but he also believes that the exact essence of that night cannot be recreated, not because the victories won’t come but because the journey, the buildup and the emotions woven into that final cannot be repeated in the same way. That rare blend of hope, pressure and shared spirit made the moment one of a kind.
