Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could be heading towards one of the biggest transitions in the franchise’s history as the team prepares to eventually replace long-time head coach Stephen Fleming. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes the decision will not be straightforward because of MS Dhoni’s continued influence within the team.

Speaking in an interview, Ashwin said CSK must first decide whether MS Dhoni is willing to officially take over as head coach. According to him, if the former captain is ready for the role, there is no better candidate to lead the franchise into its next phase. However, if Mahi is not interested, CSK should appoint someone who can work independently and take full responsibility for the team’s decisions.
Ashwin explained that even though Stephen Fleming has been the head coach, Dhoni has traditionally been the central figure in the dressing room. He said the former captain has played a major role in discussions involving team selection, the playing XI and squad planning, while also acting as a mentor to the players.
Dhoni did not play any matches during the IPL 2026 because of injuries. Taking up the head coach’s role would likely mean retiring from the IPL and there are currently no indications that he is ready to make that move.

Ashwin also said CSK now faces an important choice about its future structure. The franchise must decide whether it wants a coach who works alongside Dhoni, with Dhoni continuing to lead most cricket-related decisions, or whether it prefers a strong, independent head coach who takes complete control and accountability for the team.
According to Ashwin, this transition will require CSK to carefully balance the legacy that has brought the franchise success with the need to build for the future, making it one of the most significant decisions the team has faced in recent years.
Do you agree with R Ashwin?
