Just after a couple of days of winning his WBO title after defeating Kerry Hopes in the final match and making the nation proud, an FIR has been filed against the Indian boxer Vijender Singh for insulting the National Flag during the event.
As per reports, Ulhas PR has lodged a complaint against Vijender, accusing him of insulting the Tri-Color, saying that his shorts contained Indian Flag at the backside. The complaint has been filed in New Ashok Nagar Police Station and this is what Ulhas PR has to say in this connection, “In this match, boxer Vijender Singh was wearing a pair of shorts and on the back of it India’s national flag was placed. This is a clear violation of flag code of India.”
This was seventh straight win for the 30 years old boxer in which he defeated the former WBC European champion Kerry Hope to win the title.
As far as Ulhas PR is concerned, he is the same person who objected on the use of Tri-Color on the helmets of Indian batsmen. Not only this, he also filed a complaint against the Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan for not singing the National Anthem properly during an event.
Undoubtedly, the respect of our flag is something which should be taken care of but these players represent the country in foreign lands and make the nation proud so some leniency should be shown in their case and they should be given special permission to use Indian flag on their clothes which can be a great motivation factor for Indian players.
Vijender was not going to wear top in this match so his only option to add Tri-Color was on his shorts and in fact, the flag is not placed at the back of his shorts, it is at the side!
At one fell swoop, we should understand that it’s just a way of showing players’ love for the country and they are not intended to insult the National Flag.
There should be a restrain on moral policing because if these players are pulled in unnecessary legal hassles, when will they practice and play for the country? So the government should take note of this and ease the guidelines for the use of National Flag. These social activists like Ulhas PR should also focus on constructive work rather than going to court every now and then. For them, going to court and filing complaint may be a full time work but the other person may have some important work to do.
