With India set to begin their five-match T20I series against England in Durham on Wednesday, all eyes are on whether teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will finally make his long-awaited international debut. However, captain Shreyas Iyer refused to reveal any clues about the team combination, insisting that such decisions would remain confidential until match day.
Speaking ahead of the series opener, Shreyas Iyer avoided confirming whether the 15-year-old cricketer would feature in the playing XI. He explained that discussions regarding team selection are kept within the dressing room, as revealing any details beforehand could hand England an unnecessary advantage. While declining to disclose the final combination saying that his hands are tied, the India skipper praised Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as a remarkable young talent and expressed confidence that the youngster would make the most of his opportunity whenever it arrives.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had earlier been expected to make his international debut during India’s two-match T20I series against Ireland after earning a call-up at just 15 years of age, becoming the youngest player to receive the honour. However, the team management chose to stick with the established opening trio of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, who had played a crucial role in India’s triumphant 2026 T20 World Cup campaign.

The decision came under increased scrutiny after India suffered a surprising 2-0 whitewash against Ireland, with both Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan enduring disappointing outings. The series result intensified calls for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to be handed an opportunity in the national side.
Despite the growing debate, Shreyas Iyer firmly defended the management’s approach of backing the World Cup-winning core. He stressed that every player in the squad had contributed to the team’s success and deserved continued faith. According to the skipper, maintaining players’ confidence by offering them security and consistent opportunities is vital, particularly with major tournaments on the horizon. He also pointed out that the experienced members of the squad have repeatedly proved themselves in the T20 format and have been key pillars of India’s success, making it important for the team management to continue placing trust in them.
