Nawazuddin Siddiqui, known for both his fearless performances and unapologetic honesty, has once again drawn attention to the glaring disparity in Bollywood’s treatment of its finest talents. In a recent interview, he reflected on how the industry has failed to honour acting stalwarts like Irrfan Khan and Om Puri during their lifetime and continues to sideline extraordinary performers in favour of more commercially viable stars.
The actor expressed sadness over the fact that despite immense audience admiration for legends such as Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Manoj Bajpayee and Irrfan Khan, the film industry never made the effort to cast them in major big-budget productions. According to Nawazuddin, this neglect remains one of the biggest failures of the film industry. Though these actors captivated countless fans with their craft, he lamented that their films rarely reached a wider audience due to lack of mainstream support.
He highlighted how the industry has split actors into two unspoken categories—those admired by the public and those favoured by the industry itself. Yet, paradoxically, the very actors beloved by audiences aren’t given the spotlight they deserve, while others are consistently showcased.
When asked about how he wishes to be remembered, Nawazuddin brushed the thought aside, saying it holds no significance once a person is gone. Instead, he emphasised the importance of recognising talent during an artist’s lifetime. Referring to his late co-star Irrfan Khan, he questioned why no filmmaker ever chose to invest Rs 25 crore in a project headlined by him, despite the reverence he now receives.
Nawazuddin also recalled Om Puri’s powerful presence, noting how he once shared a scene with Jack Nicholson in the Hollywood film Wolf, where Om Puri’s performance overshadowed even the American legend. Despite such brilliance, Nawaz pointed out that the Indian industry failed to give him the respect he truly earned—both in life and in de*th.
