Telecom Ministry has received a letter from the cabinet, which states that students are affected by Facebook and at the same time, it’s also “dimming the working capabilities of the youths”, according to The Daily Star’s report which goes on to add that Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has been asked by the telecom division to express views over the matter.

The confirmation of the letter is made by the division’s secretary Shyam Sunder Sikder who has talked about the assessment of this decision to make sure that it doesn’t have any adverse effect on business communications.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is against this ban and instead suggests the involvement of educational institutions as well as parents over the issue, as reported by The Daily Star.

The regulatory body is of the opinion that blocking Facebook is not a solution to the problem and it will be of no use since Viber, WhatsApp etc. will be there for people. Additionally, it will adversely affect those individuals who depend on Facebook for their business. Instead, BTRC advises parents for using privacy features, security software and parental control software so that their kids can’t access Facebook.
