The court said that foods must be sold at regular prices only. It is also said that soon, a policy would be framed on the same.

A Mumbai resident Jainendra Baxi had challenged the rule of outside food being prohibited inside the theaters and multiplexes. This litigation was heard by a bench of judges M.S Karnik and S. M Kemkar.

Aditya Pratap Singh, the lawyer of the petitioner said that there’s no legal law which prohibits people from carrying outside food or water.

Usually, people can’t buy food inside the multiplexes because it’s way too costly. According to Justice Kemkar, “The price of food and water bottles sold inside movie theatres are, indeed, exorbitant. We have ourselves experienced it. You (multiplexes) should sell it at the regular price.”

He further said, “If multiplexes were prohibiting people from bringing outside food, then there should be a total prohibition on eatables. Then you (multiplexes) cannot have your own vendors selling food and other snacks inside.”

All suggestions made by Baxi and MOA i.e. Multiplex Owners Association would be considered and accordingly, a favorable policy would be framed. The entire process would take around 6 weeks or so.

In the petition, it was also written that senior citizens are affected the most because most of them can’t eat junk food due to medical reasons.

The next hearing is scheduled on the 12th of June 2018, let us see what happens.
