Sachin Tendulkar’s legendary Test record of 15,921 runs could be under threat, with England star Joe Root steadily moving closer to the historic mark. However, former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik believes Virat Kohli reaching 100 international centuries will be a much more difficult task.

Joe Root has scored 14,278 runs in 169 Tests and is currently only 1,643 runs behind Sachin Tendulkar, who retired from Test cricket in 2013. If Joe Root continues to maintain his current batting average of 50.45 or even performs slightly below that level, he could potentially surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record in around 16-20 Tests.
Joe Root has already shown how quickly he can accumulate runs. In 2021, he scored 1,708 runs in just 15 Tests, a year that marked the beginning of his remarkable turnaround in Test cricket.

At 35 years old, Joe Root still has time to add significantly to his tally. England also play around 15-20 Tests almost every year, giving him plenty of opportunities to close the gap. As a result, Sachin Tendulkar’s record could be within Joe Root’s reach unless there is a major change in his career or playing schedule.
Dinesh Karthik also feels Joe Root has a realistic opportunity to break the record. He highlighted England’s busy Test schedule and Joe Root’s continued consistency with the bat, pointing out that the experienced batter remains technically sound and continues to score runs regularly.

When it comes to Virat Kohli and the possibility of reaching 100 international centuries, however, Dinesh Karthik is far less optimistic. Virat Kohli currently has 86 international centuries but has retired from both T20Is and Test cricket. He is also more than 3,000 runs behind Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI run record. However, in theory, a brilliant run of around 1,500-1,600 runs could take Kohli past that ODI mark.
DK expressed hope that Virat Kohli reaches the 100-century milestone but believes the achievement will be extremely difficult given Kohli’s reduced international schedule.

Virat Kohli’s next international assignment will be the ODI series against New Zealand, which begins on November 4.
