The clouds of uncertainty finally got cleared as the Pakistan government has officially directed its national men’s cricket team to play against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The much-anticipated match is scheduled for February 15 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and the decision effectively brings an end to a week-long standoff involving the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The decision came after Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was formally briefed by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. The briefing covered the outcomes of high-level discussions between the PCB, the ICC and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), which had been closely involved in efforts to resolve the situation.
According to an official government statement, Pakistan reviewed formal requests submitted by the BCB, along with messages from Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates and other ICC member nations. These communications collectively urged Pakistan to help find a workable solution to the issue, stressing the broader impact on international cricket.
The government also took note of comments made by BCB President Amin ul Islam, who publicly appealed to the PCB not to boycott the match. His remarks highlighted the importance of unity and cooperation among cricket playing nations during a sensitive moment.
In its response, Pakistan acknowledged Bangladesh’s outreach and reaffirmed the close ties between the two countries, emphasising solidarity and mutual respect.
The statement further revealed that Shehbaz Sharif held a phone conversation with the Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. During what was described as a warm and cordial exchange, both the leaders reflected on the long-standing friendship between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, particularly their history of supporting each other during difficult times. President Dissanayake personally requested Pakistan to seriously consider resolving the impasse in an amicable manner.
Taking into account the progress made during multilateral discussions and the appeals from friendly nations, the Government of Pakistan concluded that participation was the best path forward.
It therefore formally instructed the Pakistan national cricket team to take the field on February 15, 2026, for its scheduled T20 World Cup fixture, clearing the way for one of cricket’s most watched rivalries to go ahead as planned.
