The news of Arijit Singh stepping away from film playback singing has sparked many reactions across the music industry, but one voice that stands out is that of singer-composer Palash Sen. Drawing from his own life experiences, Palash says Arijit’s decision feels deeply familiar to him, as he once found himself at a similar crossroads early in his career.
Palash Sen recently reflected on his journey while responding to reports about Arijit Singh quitting playback singing. He shared that he completely understands why Arijit has chosen to move on from films because he too faced disappointment, criticism and confusion within the film industry before deciding to follow his own independent path.
Taking to Instagram, Palash Sen posted a series of photographs from his 2002 film “Filhaal”, which marked the directorial debut of Meghna Gulzar. The film featured a strong cast including Sanjay Suri, Tabu and Sushmita Sen. Alongside the pictures, Palash opened up about the memories attached to the project and how it shaped his outlook.
He wrote: “24 years back this day or perhaps on 2nd Feb, my first film as an actor , FILHAAL, was released .. it was a flop .. I was written off badly by most critics and trolled by most filmi people.. there was a particular model /actress, who gave me a lecture on why I shouldn’t act in films, as did so many more (sic).”
The “Maaeri” composer admitted that acting in films was never his main goal. “I wasn’t interested in films to begin with,” he explained, adding that his motivation for doing “Filhaal” was purely musical.
“I did this one as I just wanted to sing one song written by the greatest poet- writer of all time , Gulzar saab. That the song was to be composed by the legendary Anu ji was my other dream come true. And that was it. I really don’t know why I was perceived as a threat (sic).”
Palash Sen shared that he approached the project with a simple mindset, focusing on enjoying the process and doing his job sincerely. Working alongside actors like Sushmita Sen, Tabu and Sanjay Suri became a rewarding experience, while being directed by Meghna Gulzar remains a cherished memory for him.
“That I got to work with the amazing Sush, Tabu & Sanjay was my reward. Finally to be directed by the awesome Meghna is my cherished experience of a lifetime. I have nothing but beautiful memories and I am so proud of this ahead its time movie. In fact , now that it is such a success on TV, it makes me so happy & grateful (sic),” he said.
Palash then directly addressed Arijit Singh’s decision to stop taking up playback singing assignments. “The truth is I know why my bro, Arijit is quitting film playback. I was there way back & I chose my own path.. the path , that I know,Arijit will now walk on (sic).”
Adding a lighter note, Palash also recalled awards season memories from that time. “Fun fact: that year I got nominated for all Best newcomer awards .. including Filmfare .. of course I won nothing. Even Euphoria has never won anything . But you know , the people of this country gave me so much love .. way beyond and above any award and that model ?? Hahahaha (sic).”

Arijit Singh had announced his decision on January 27, revealing that he would not accept any new playback singing assignments. He wrote, “Hello, Happy new year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much of love all these years as listeners. I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey (sic).”
