Yogi Adityanath has been taking decisions and implementing them at a very fast pace and ban on illegal slaughterhouses was one of them. However, the Allahabad High Court has strictly conveyed to the state government that it cannot impose a ban on meat through the backdoor means of banning illegal slaughterhouses. The court has also stated that it is the duty of the government to see that people get legal and healthy meat to consume.

As per LiveLaw.in, the bench comprising of judges Sanjay Harkauli and Amreshwar Pratap Sahi was conducting a hearing on the petition of a meat vendor who wanted to renew his license. It also ordered the UP government to call a meeting of its committee regarding the licensing of slaughterhouses and meat shops before April 13.

The court said,

“To provide an immediate check on unlawful activity should be simultaneous with facilitating the carrying of lawful activity, particularly that relating to food, food habits and vending thereof that is undisputedly connected with the right to life and livelihood. Food that is conducive to health cannot be treated as a wrong choice, and it is the State’s duty to ensure supply of healthy food items.”

This has shown a ray of hope to those who have been severely affected as a number of people have lost their jobs while many have lost food from their plates. Not to forget, Uttar Pradesh is the biggest exporter of meat and substantial revenue loss will take place if the meat industry keeps on suffering like this.
