Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attends many meetings and events and it’s quite obvious that everywhere he has been welcomed with a bouquet.
But now this practice is going to change and the bouquet will be replaced by a flower, khadi handkerchief or book.
On Monday, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued directions to all the states and the union territories, stating that PM Modi should not be presented bouquets during his visits within India.
The notification reads,
“No bouquet may be presented to the PM during his tours within India. At best will be a flower among with a khadi handkerchief or a book may be presented to welcome the dignitary. All states/Union territories are requested to suitably sensitise all concerned to ensure strict compliance of the above instructions.”
Nearly a month ago, on June 17, PM Modi attended the launch of PN Panicker Reading Day, where he said,
“I believe that reading and knowledge should not be limited only to work related aspects. It should help develop habits of social responsibility, service to the nation and service to humanity. It should cure the evils in society and nation. It should spread the idea of peace along with respect for unity and integrity of the nation. Such a move can make a big difference.”
PM Modi was supported by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on this matter as Shashi tweeted, “I support @narendramodi on this: let’s not massacre flowers for transient gratification, but give gifts that endure.”

Undoubtedly, this is a great initiative, considering the fact that flowers do not have longevity but a book or handkerchief will last longer and books can also contribute to the social and mental development of a person.
This practice should be taken up by common public also while attending marriages or other functions! What do you say?
