We are inching closer to the end of 2023 and in almost 10 days, we will be welcoming the year 2024. A lot has happened in 2023 and some incidents will always be etched in our minds. Let us just revisit the important events that took place in the country and the world in the year 2023…
1. Wrestlers’ protest:
The Indian wrestlers staged protests against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh as they alleged that Singh s*xually harassed women wrestlers when he was the President of the Wrestling Federation of India.
2. Devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria:
More than 50K people lost their lives in Turkey and over 8K people lost lives in Syria.
3. Border-Gavaskar Trophy:
The Indian cricket team won BGT at home.
4. Rahul Gandhi disqualified as MP:
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi got disqualified as Lok Sabha member after he was convicted by a court in criminal defamation case.
5. Atiq Ahmed k*lling:
The gangster and politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother got killed on camera in Prayagraj.
6. Gambhir-Kohli clash:
The ugly spat between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli after a match in the IPL 2023 will be remembered for many years to come.
7. CSK’s 5th title win:
MS Dhoni led CSK to its 5th title win in the IPL 2023.
8. India is the most populous country:
India surpassed China in terms of population.
9. Manipur violence:
Manipur got burnt as two communities clashed against each other.
10. WTC final:
India lost the WTC final for the consecutive second time.
11. Karnataka elections:
BJP lost the state to Congress in state elections.
12. 2023 Odisha train collision:
It’s one of the deadliest accidents as three trains collided against each other, more than 290 people lost lives and 1200 were left injured.
13. Achieved a lot in sports:
India won the SAFF Championship, Indian hockey team won the Asian Champions Trophy and Praggnanandhaa made country proud in Chess WC.
14. Chandrayaan -3:
India’s ambitious lunar mission was a huge success.
15. The Golden Boy:
Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won the Gold in the World Athletics Championship.
16. New Parliament building:
The country got its new Parliament building
17. I.N.D.I.A:
Many opposition parties came under the umbrella of I.N.D.I.A.
18. Israel-Palestine War:
Israel launched a scathing attack on Palestine after HAMAS abducted and k*lled many Israelis.
19. G20 summit:
India increased its stature in the world by hosting the prestigious G20 summit.
20. Asia Cup:
The Indian cricket team won the Asia Cup after a long time.
21. Asian Games:
For the first time in the Asian Games, the medal tally of India crossed the mark of 100 medals.
22. Same-sex marriage:
Supreme Court gave a big blow to same-sex marriage supporters as it refused to legalize the marriage in the country.
23. ICC ODI World Cup 2023
Rohit Sharma-led Indian team lost the finals of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 to Australia after remaining unbeatable in the tournament.
24. BJP stuns Congress:
BJP stuns Congress by winning state elections in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Congress manages to win in Telangana only.
25. Uttarakhand tunnel collapse:
41 workers got trapped after a section of the Silkyara Bend–Barkot tunnel got collapsed on 12 November. Various organizations such as the Uttarakhand Police, Project Shivalik of the Border Roads Organisation, National Disaster Response Force, the State Disaster Response Force and engineers from the Indian Army Corps of Engineers along with Australian tunneling experts Arnold Dix and Chris Cooper were involved in the rescue operations. It took almost 17 days to rescue all the 41 workers who were later medically examined at AIIMS and were declared completely fit.
26. Security breach at Parliament:
On 13 December, 2 persons threw yellow gas canisters in Lok Sabha gallery after entering from public gallery. Police is investigating the case and it has been found that it took months of planning for these criminals to commit such an act.
27. Hardik Pandya returns to MI:
Mumbai Indians traded Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans in an all-cash deal and has appointed him as the new skipper of the Mumbai team.
28. Bobby Deol in “Animal”:
Bobby Deol is getting a lot of praise for his performance in “Animal” despite getting a limited screen time and the song “Jamal Kudu’ in which he made an entry is also getting loved by audiences.
29. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc:
Mitchell Starc scripted history by becoming the most expensive player in the IPL, KKR spent Rs. 24.75 crore on Mitchell Starc and SRH bought Pat Cummins for Rs. 20.50 crore.
