Winning gold in a completely new event is a special achievement and Indian para-athlete Pranav Soorma found a unique way to explain it by comparing himself to cricket superstar Virat Kohli.
Pranav Soorma, a silver medallist at the Paris Paralympics, won gold in the discus throw at the Asian Para Games on Tuesday. Making his debut in the event at a major international competition, the 32-year-old also set a new Asian record, making his achievement even more special.

Pranav Soorma won gold in the combined F51/52/53 discus throw event, while fellow Indian athlete Ram Ratan Singh secured silver to give India a memorable one-two finish.
Explaining the significance of his performance, Pranav Soorma compared it to Virat Kohli, one of India’s finest batters, occasionally bowling and picking up a wicket. He said that, just as Kohli sometimes takes a break from batting to bowl an over and dismiss a batter, winning gold in a new event was a similarly rewarding experience.
Pranav Soorma secured the gold medal with a throw of 11.66 metres on his fourth attempt, setting a new Asian record. He had previously won gold in the F51 club throw at the Asian Para Games held in China and also claimed gold in the club throw at the Hangzhou Asian Games. At the Paris Paralympics, he won silver in the same discipline.

Ram Ratan Singh, 31, finished second with a throw of 10.35 metres on his second attempt, ensuring that India claimed both the gold and silver medals in the event.
After his record-breaking performance, Pranav Soorma expressed happiness at achieving his personal best and setting a new continental record in a discipline he was competing in for the first time at such a major event. The Indian athlete also explained that the club throw remains his primary event, while discus throw is his second discipline. This time, he is participating in both events at the competition.
Pranav Soorma also highlighted the technical differences between the two disciplines. In club throw, athletes apply glue to the club and grip it with their fingers. Discus throw, however, requires glue to be applied across the entire hand, making the process of securing the grip and releasing the discus a technically demanding task.

Despite these challenges, Pranav Soorma delivered an outstanding performance in his new event, adding another major achievement to his career and demonstrating his ability to excel beyond his main discipline.
Congratulations, Pranav Soorma!
