Even though Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have stepped away from two formats of the game, questions about their future in Indian cricket continue to dominate discussions. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has now shared his thoughts on whether the veteran stars will be part of India’s plans for the next ODI World Cup.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from T20 Internationals after India’s triumph at the 2024 T20 World Cup. Later, both the players also stepped away from Test cricket midway through last year. As a result, the two modern-day greats are now active only in the ODI format.

Despite reducing their workload, neither player has shown signs of slowing down. Their recent performances against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand have strengthened their claims for selection in the ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in South Africa next year.

Speaking about the duo’s future, Ashwin suggested that the decision will ultimately rest with the Indian team management. He explained that if the management wants Rohit and Kohli at the 50-over World Cup and believes their experience remains valuable, there are enough ways to manage their workload and keep them fit for the tournament.

Ashwin also noted that modern rehabilitation programs, careful planning and a positive environment can help senior players extend their careers. However, he indicated that if the management begins looking toward a different direction, the situation could become more challenging for the players.

The numbers certainly support the veterans. Across recent ODI series against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, Virat Kohli delivered outstanding performances. He scored 616 runs in nine innings, the highest by any Indian batter during that period. His tally included three centuries, three half-centuries and a Player of the Series award.

Rohit Sharma also enjoyed a productive run, scoring 409 runs. His performances featured one century, three fifties and a Player of the Series award too.

While both the stars have continued to prove their value on the field, the final call will be made by the selectors and team management. The key question remains: will India back the experience of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for one more World Cup campaign or will they choose to build a completely youthful squad for the challenge in South Africa?
