Sometimes the moments that change a career don’t happen in the spotlight — they happen quietly, years earlier, in the middle of disappointment. For Ravichandran Ashwin, one such moment took place back in 2012, after India suffered a rare Test series loss at home to England. That defeat left such a deep mark on him that he made a private promise — if India ever lost another home Test series, he would walk away from the game.
More than a decade later, that promise caught up with him. When India were whitewashed by New Zealand, Ashwin felt something breaking inside him. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said the loss affected him so deeply that it ultimately led to his retirement during the Test tour of Australia last year. He hoped that younger players would feel the same urge to reflect and evolve after difficult series losses.
R Ashwin’s retirement after the third Test of the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy had stunned fans and experts alike. Many wondered if he had been nudged toward the decision by team management but Ashwin made it clear that this wasn’t the case. He explained that no one asked him to leave; in fact, several people including the then-captain Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir encouraged him to reconsider and continue playing. The final call was entirely his.
He also shared that he didn’t want to stay with the squad in a non-playing role, especially if he wasn’t going to be part of the playing XI. For Ashwin, retirement was a deeply personal choice, one shaped by his own expectations, beliefs and the vow he made to himself years ago.
