Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, December 30, to express his thoughts on the controversy surrounding Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal in the fourth Test which was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The incident occurred when the Australian captain Pat Cummins opted for a review after Yashasvi Jaiswal played a shot off his bowling. Despite no conclusive evidence of the ball touching Yashasvi Jaiswal’s bat or gloves and no movement on the snickometer, the third umpire declared him out, sparking heated debates.

Before his dismissal in the 71st over, Yashasvi Jaiswal had been a key figure in India’s fightback. He scored 84 runs off 208 balls, including 8 boundaries, and shared an 88-run partnership with Rishabh Pant (30) for the fourth wicket. Their efforts revived India’s hopes after a dismal start, which saw three wickets fall for just 33 runs in 26.1 overs during the first session.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s impressive innings not only kept India in the match but also secured his place in cricketing history. With this performance, he became the second highest Indian run-scorer in a calendar year in Test cricket, amassing 1,478 runs in 15 matches in 2024. The record for the most Test runs in a year by an Indian remains with Sachin Tendulkar who scored 1,562 runs in 2010. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who debuted in July 2023 against West Indies, has firmly established himself as a rising star in Indian cricket.

As far as the 4th test match is concerned, Australia has won the match by 184 runs and has taken a lead of 2-1 in the five-match series. The fifth and the final test match will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3.
