His latest film Bhool Chuk Maaf once again places him in familiar territory, a modest young man from Banaras in love with a girl next door. However, despite initial comparisons to some of his previous characters, Rajkummar Rao insists that this project felt refreshingly original from the moment it was offered to him.
Reflecting on how the film came to him, Rajkummar Rao shared that he was instantly captivated by the uniqueness of the concept when he first heard the story from director Karan. What stood out for him was not only the storyline’s freshness in the context of Hindi cinema but also its successful blending of genre and emotional depth.
The narrative revolves around a time loop, a structure that is more common in Western films but rarely explored in Indian storytelling. Rajkummar Rao expressed his excitement about the film’s comedic layers, well-drawn character arcs and the subtle yet powerful social commentary woven into the script, which he felt brought everything together in a meaningful way.
The story unfolds during the lead character’s haldi ceremony, where Rajkummar Rao’s character Ranjan Tiwari finds himself inexplicably stuck reliving the same day over and over. For Rajkummar Rao, this narrative device wasn’t just a novelty, it became a creative challenge.
While the setting and emotional stakes mirrored those of his earlier films, the circumstances were entirely new, offering him an opportunity to portray a range of emotions from frustration and confusion to vulnerability and humour.
He explained that even when playing characters rooted in similar backgrounds, he is constantly working to add subtle distinctions. Whether through a particular physical trait or a private emotional thread that he carries throughout the performance, Rajkummar Rao says he makes a conscious effort to ensure that no two characters feel the same. This approach was no different in Bhool Chuk Maaf, where the unique structure of the script allowed him to explore varying responses from his character as he experienced the same events in a loop but under changing emotional states.
In this film, the actor gets to embody everything from anger to helplessness, even reaching moments of heartfelt apology, all within a single day’s events. He credits the writing and direction for providing the canvas to explore these emotional layers.
