Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has expressed concern over the treatment of former Pakistan captain Imran Khan, saying that the cricketer deserves better treatment on humanitarian grounds.
Imran Khan has been in prison in Pakistan since 2023, and several current and former cricketers have reportedly called for diplomatic intervention over his situation. Ravi Shastri has now joined those raising concerns about the former Pakistan captain’s condition.

Speaking to a news channel, Ravi Shastri said the reports about Imran Khan’s treatment were disturbing. He stressed that his comments were being made from a humanitarian point of view and suggested that many cricketers around the world could share similar concerns. Reports have also claimed that Imran’s health has deteriorated during his time in jail, with only 15% vision reportedly remaining in his right eye.
Ravi Shastri said he was not speaking as a politician but as someone who found the situation difficult to understand from a human perspective. He said he hoped Imran Khan was safe, receiving proper care and that his health remained a priority.
The former India cricketer also pointed out Imran’s huge global recognition. According to Ravi Shastri, the former Pakistan captain has been one of the most recognisable Pakistani personalities around the world and should be treated accordingly. Ravi Shastri acknowledged that he does not fully understand the political circumstances surrounding Imran’s imprisonment. However, he questioned why the former cricketer should continue to remain in a cell for such a long period.

While recalling his playing days against Imran Khan, Ravi Shastri also spoke highly of his former rival’s cricketing ability. He said the India-Pakistan rivalry during their era was intense but built on mutual respect. Ravi Shastri described Imran Khan as an exceptional cricketer, stressing that calling him simply a great player would not fully capture his impact on the game. The former India coach ultimately hoped that Imran would eventually be released and would receive better treatment, particularly with concerns surrounding his health.
